Avalanche control was completed by 1300 Jan 6. YRB crews worked doggedly to clear avalanche debris off the Hwy. Some deposits were up to 5 meters deep over both lanes.
The road was opened by early evening.
After two natural avalanche cycles and two control missions in the past 48 hours, snow cover has been eroded to the ground in most paths. The likelihood of natural avalanches has not been eliminated but reduced sufficiently that we are not planning delays for control missions in the foreseeable future. However over the next few days expect minor delays as YRB crews clean debris from catchment areas in preparation for future avalanche cycles.
We realise the inconvenience that avalanche related highway closures create but the safety of highways users and workers is our primary concern.
Thank you everyone for your patience over the past couple of days.
Thank you to YRB Kaslo crews for their assistance and efforts to minimize the duration of closures.
