The RDCK is challenging all of its residents to sign up for its easy and free emergency notification system, an alert program that could help save lives.
“Over 300 people registered for the system in 24 hours,” said Andrew Bellerby, Regional Fire Chief with the RDCK. “That’s awesome, but we want every one of our 60,000 residents to sign up in order to receive free text messages and landline calls in case emergency strikes the area for which they’ve signed up for.”
Chief Bellerby stresses that during a disaster, every second can count.
“The situation in Fort McMurray reminds us that we need to react fast to emergency events. This tool will help us do that.”

In addition to the community notification system, the RDCK also posts information about emergency events on its website at www.rdck.bc.ca and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rdcentralkootenay .
Press releases are also sent to media outlets; in case of emergency, please tune in to your local radio station or visit online news sites.
“The RDCK is committed to our public’s safety so we’re urging everyone to be as prepared as possible for disasters,” said Chief Bellerby.
